Selling during a divorce

How do we do this fairly, and who decides what?

Step 6 of 6

What comes next for me?

The answer

Each of you moves to a new place and starts a new chapter. If you're buying, your share of the proceeds and your own income now set the budget; if you're renting for a while, that's a reasonable way to let things settle. Give yourself time before any big decision, and lean on the people around you.

Relief, sadness and optimism can show up on the same day. All of it is normal.

What people wish they'd known
  • Rushing into a purchase to feel settled. Renting for a year is a legitimate plan.
  • Isolating. This is a time to let people in.
  • Making big financial moves while everything is raw. Wait for the dust to settle.
