Selling during a divorce

How do we do this fairly, and who decides what?

Step 2 of 6

How do we agree on a plan when we don't agree on much?

The answer

Agree the basics once: the price range, the timeline, which repairs are worth doing, and the agent. Interview agents together and pick one you both trust; an agent chosen by one side feels unfair to the other. Then let the plan and the agent carry the decisions so you don't have to relitigate each one.

The shared interest is real: both of you do better with a higher price and a faster sale. Use that as the common ground.

How long
Most people spend about a week here.
What it costs
Usually nothing now. Interviewing agents together is free. Agent pay is negotiated and set in writing in a listing agreement you both sign; put who pays for any repairs in your written plan too.

What people wish they'd known
  • One person choosing the agent. It undermines trust from the first day.
  • Skipping the written plan. Every unmade decision becomes an argument later.
  • Fighting over small repairs. Agree on a budget and let the agent prioritize.

From the Thrive team

  • Focus on mutual benefit. Every dollar of sale price is shared; that's a reason to cooperate even when nothing else is.
The next thing people ask

What's it worth, and can we both trust the number?
