Selling during a divorce

How do we do this fairly, and who decides what?

Step 4 of 6

How do we sell it without fighting over every showing?

The answer

Both of you get the same information at the same time: the showing schedule, the feedback, every offer. Decide in advance how you'll respond to offers and within what time. Whoever is living in the home keeps it show-ready; whoever isn't respects the schedule. Transparency prevents the feeling of being blindsided.

Showings are intrusive at a hard time. A predictable schedule makes them bearable.

How long
Most people spend about a month here.

What people wish they'd known
  • Excluding one person from information. It creates distrust and can create legal problems.
  • Blocking showings out of frustration. Every refused showing costs both of you.
  • Making unilateral counteroffers. Both signatures are needed anyway.

From the Thrive team

  • Let the agent be the messenger. It removes a lot of friction to have decisions relayed rather than debated directly.
