Downsizing

How do I make the next home simpler without losing what matters?

Step 6 of 6

How do I settle into the smaller life?

The answer

Give it a few weeks before you judge it. Set up the home, file for the homestead exemption and any senior exemption you qualify for, then get out into the neighborhood: the point of downsizing is more time and energy for what you actually want, and that only shows up if you use it.

Unfamiliar isn't wrong. Most people feel settled by the second month.

How long
Most people spend about a month here.

In Georgia

File for the homestead exemption with your new county by April 1 to have it apply that tax year, and ask about age-based exemptions at the same time.

What people wish they'd known
  • Second-guessing in week one. That's adjustment, not regret.
  • Refilling the empty spaces. You downsized on purpose; keep the discipline.
  • Staying inside. The lifestyle benefits come from being out in the new place.
