Downsizing

How do I make the next home simpler without losing what matters?

Step 3 of 6

How do I deal with decades of stuff?

The answer

Start before you list, and start with the rooms you don't use. Sort into keep, sell, give and let go, and be more aggressive than feels natural: what you haven't touched in two years isn't coming with you. An estate-sale company can handle the selling for a commission, and buyers pay more for a home that looks spacious.

It takes longer than anyone plans and it's tiring in a specific way. Do it in sessions, not marathons.

What people wish they'd known
  • Listing first and decluttering later. It slows the sale and doubles the stress.
  • Keeping things for 'someday.' If it hasn't been used in two years, it's a maybe at best.
  • Underestimating the time. Give it weeks, not a weekend.

From the Thrive team

  • Photograph sentimental items you're letting go. Most of what we keep is the memory, and the photo holds it.
