Downsizing

How do I make the next home simpler without losing what matters?

Step 5 of 6

How do I manage the move between two homes?

The answer

Line up the closings as close together as you can, and if there's a gap, plan for it now: a short rent-back on the home you're selling, a stay with family, or storage. Make a floor plan of the new home before moving day so you know what fits, and move only that. Everything else is easier to sell now than to carry.

The move is a logistics project. A written plan with dates removes most of the stress.

What people wish they'd known
  • Moving too much furniture. What fit before won't fit now; measure first.
  • Moving without a written plan. Two homes at once needs dates on paper.
  • Assuming the new home has storage. Measure closets before you decide what to keep.

From the Thrive team

  • If you need temporary housing for a few weeks, family is usually cheaper and easier than a lease.
