Definition

A perc test measures how quickly soil absorbs water. It's basically the soil's ability to handle a septic system drain field. Poor perc results mean your septic system won't work—you'll need expensive alternatives or municipal sewer. Good perc results are gold for rural development.

About this term

Perc tests involve digging holes and measuring water absorption rates. Results determine if septic systems are feasible and what size system is required. Poor perc rates limit development.

Pro Tip

Get perc tests done before buying rural property without municipal sewer. Poor results can kill your development plans or require expensive mitigation. Factor soil testing into your due diligence.

Example

A perc test showing 2-minute drainage rate suitable for a standard septic system.
