Selling a home I inherited

What do I owe, and what has to happen first?

Step 3 of 6

How does probate work, and how long will it take?

The answer

If probate is required, the court validates the will (or appoints an administrator), notifies heirs and creditors, and oversees paying debts before assets transfer. It can take a few months to a year depending on the estate. In many cases the home can be listed and even sold during probate with the court's approval.

Paperwork, waiting, and a few deadlines that matter. Your attorney tracks them; your job is to respond quickly when asked.

How long
Most people spend about 3 months here.

In Georgia

In Georgia, the executor or administrator typically needs authority from the probate court (often granted in the will or by petition) before selling real estate; a probate attorney can confirm what your letters allow.
