About this term

LVL is manufactured from softwood veneers laminated with waterproof adhesive to create strong, consistent beams and headers. LVL has fewer defects and greater strength than solid lumber of equivalent size. LVL is used for rim boards, headers over openings, and bearing beams. Products are sized for specific loads and spans. LVL is slightly more expensive than solid lumber but provides superior performance.

Pro Tip

LVL is standard in modern homes for structural headers. Verify proper sizing and installation of all structural members.

Example

A header over a 12-foot opening uses dual 1.75-inch LVLs laminated together, providing equivalent strength to a solid 4x12 with less material.
