Definition

Closing is the big moment when everything finalizes—you sign all the papers, wire your money, the seller hands over the keys, and you officially own the home. It's usually a 1-2 hour meeting at a title company office.

About this term

Closing represents the culmination of weeks or months of negotiations, inspections, and financing arrangements. During closing, the buyer receives the keys and takes legal possession of the property, while the seller receives the sale proceeds minus any payoffs and closing costs. This process typically takes 1-2 hours and involves multiple parties including the buyer, seller, real estate agents, title company, and often an attorney.

Pro Tip

Arrive early to closing and bring your photo ID, proof of homeowners insurance, and a valid check if needed. Review the Closing Disclosure at least 3 days beforehand so you're not surprised.

Example

Sarah and Tom's closing took place on Friday, March 15th at the title company office. They signed 40+ pages of documents, wired $375,000 in funds, and received the keys to their new $450,000 home.
