About this term

Well inspections examine above-ground components (pressure tank, pump, controls) and assess water flow rate and quality. Lab testing verifies safety for bacteria, nitrates, minerals, and contaminants. Old wells may have reduced capacity or contaminated water. Repairs include pump replacement, tank service, or entire system upgrade. Well maintenance is the homeowner's responsibility; municipal water systems do not apply.

Pro Tip

Have well and water quality tested during home purchase. If contaminants are found, budget for filtration.

Example

A well inspection revealed a 30-year-old pump nearing failure and water quality concerns regarding nitrate levels. Pump replacement ($1,800) and installation of nitrate filtration ($1,200) addressed both issues.
