Definition

VOCs are chemical compounds released from paints, finishes, adhesives, and other materials. They create that 'new smell' after painting but affect indoor air quality and can cause respiratory irritation. Proper ventilation reduces indoor VOC levels, and low-VOC products minimize exposure.

About this term

VOC levels are highest immediately after application and decrease over time with ventilation. VOC exposure can cause respiratory problems and headaches. Low-VOC paints and products are increasingly available. Proper ventilation reduces indoor VOC levels.

Pro Tip

Use low-VOC paints and products; ventilate thoroughly after application. The smell fades faster with good air circulation.

Example

A newly painted interior with fresh VOC odors and elevated indoor air VOC concentrations.
