About this term

Punch lists are created during final walkthrough and include cosmetic issues, missing fixtures, incomplete paint, hardware installation, and other non-structural items. Punch lists are normal in construction and do not prevent closing in most cases. Items must be scheduled for completion before or shortly after closing. Some builders require punch list completion before closing; others allow items to be completed after. Punch list disputes are common sources of buyer dissatisfaction.

Pro Tip

Create detailed punch lists with photos and specific descriptions. Ambiguous items can result in incomplete repairs.

Example

A punch list includes touch-up paint, cabinet door alignment, faucet installation, trim caulking, and final landscaping.
