About this term

Powder post beetles prefer hardwood with high starch content. Evidence includes round exit holes (1/32 inch diameter), powdery frass, and galleries visible in cross-sections. Infestations develop slowly over years; damage is often not visible until severe. Treatment involves fumigation or heat treatment. Prevention includes moisture control and proper wood storage. Hardwood floors are particularly vulnerable.

Pro Tip

Keep wood moisture levels below 12-15% to prevent infestation. If you find powder post beetles, heat treatment is effective but can be costly.

Example

An inspection of hardwood floors revealed powder post beetle damage—numerous small holes and powdery dust. Treatment involved heat treatment of the affected floor area, followed by refinishing.
