Definition

A mini-split is a ductless heating/cooling system that's perfect if you can't run traditional ductwork. Think of it as an air conditioner and heater combined, and it gives you zone control so different rooms can be different temperatures.

About this term

Mini-split systems (ductless heat pumps) are ideal for retrofits, additions, or homes without ductwork. Each indoor unit operates independently, allowing different temperature zones. Systems are more efficient than window AC units and provide both heating and cooling. Installation requires running refrigerant lines through walls rather than ductwork. Costs range from $2,000-5,000 depending on number of zones. Inspectors assess system type, condition, and refrigerant charge.

Pro Tip

Mini-splits are excellent for additions, basements, or retrofits where running ductwork would be a nightmare. They're efficient and give you flexibility.

Example

A homeowner added a finished basement needing heating and cooling without extending existing ductwork. A single-zone mini-split system cost $3,200 and provided efficient heating and cooling to the new space.
