Definition

A massive house built during booms—impressive size but often lacking architectural distinction or quality. The design looks generic, materials may have shortcuts, and resale can be challenging. Think "more is more" without the artistry.

About this term

McMansions are large homes (4,000-8,000+ sq ft) built in cookie-cutter subdivisions with similar designs and premium finishes but questionable quality or architectural merit. Characterized by mismatched architectural styles, excessive ornamentation, and poor proportions. Built during housing booms with emphasis on size and appearance over quality. Construction often has shortcuts or defects. Market perception has become negative, viewing McMansions as ostentatious and poorly designed. Resale has become difficult in some markets as buyers prefer custom or unique homes. McMansion inventory is high in some suburban markets. Properties often appraise below replacement cost.

Pro Tip

Carefully evaluate McMansion condition and market demand. Resale can be surprisingly difficult despite size.

Example

A McMansion featured 7,000 square feet with mixed architectural styles and excessive ornamentation on a small lot.
