About this term

HERS ratings are calculated by certified raters using software analysis of home characteristics, equipment, and construction details. Reference homes score 100; efficient homes score below 100. HERS scores enable comparison of home efficiency and qualify for energy efficiency financing. Lower HERS scores result from better insulation, efficient equipment, proper air sealing, and renewable energy. HERS certification is required for many energy efficiency rebates and tax credits.

Pro Tip

HERS scores provide objective efficiency comparison. Request HERS ratings to compare home efficiency across builders.

Example

A certified ENERGY STAR home achieves a HERS score of 55, indicating it uses 45% less energy than a reference new home.
