About this term

Gas lines must be properly installed, maintained, and inspected for leaks. A gas leak can be dangerous and should be reported immediately to the utility company. In a home inspection, the inspector checks that the gas system is functioning properly and that there are no obvious gas leak issues. If there's any concern about gas safety, a professional gas inspection may be warranted.

Pro Tip

If you smell gas in or near your house, leave immediately and call your gas utility from outside.

Example

A home inspector notices a gas water heater that is old and corroded; the buyer includes this as a repair request or negotiates for the seller to replace it before closing.
