About this term

Forced air systems heat or cool air centrally and distribute it throughout the home via ductwork and registers. They provide rapid temperature changes and can include air filtration, humidity control, and ventilation. Ductwork quality affects efficiency and comfort. Common problems include leaky ducts, inadequate insulation, and dirty filters reducing airflow. Inspectors assess ductwork visibility, condition, sealing, and insulation.

Pro Tip

Ensure forced air ductwork is properly insulated, particularly in unconditioned spaces.

Example

A home with forced air HVAC had poorly insulated ductwork in an unconditioned attic, losing significant conditioned air. Insulating ducts with R-8 insulation improved comfort and reduced energy bills.
