Find my pathAbout this term
Chinese drywall was used during the post-Hurricane Katrina reconstruction and housing boom. It releases hydrogen sulfide and carbonyl sulfide gases, causing symptoms similar to asthma and bronchitis. The gases corrode copper wiring in AC units and electrical systems, creating fire hazards. Affected homes require drywall removal and replacement—very expensive. Limited class action settlements provided some compensation. Homes built 2001-2007, particularly in Gulf Coast states, are highest risk.
Pro Tip
Homes built 2001-2007 in Gulf Coast regions may have Chinese drywall. If experiencing respiratory symptoms, have it tested.
Example
A home built in 2004 in Florida showed health symptoms consistent with Chinese drywall exposure. Lab analysis confirmed sulfur compounds. Complete drywall replacement in affected areas cost $35,000.
