About this term

Arc faults occur when electricity jumps across gaps in wiring, creating dangerous heat that can ignite insulation or nearby materials. AFCI breakers or outlets detect these arcs and interrupt power before fire starts. Building codes require AFCI protection on bedroom circuits and increasingly on other circuits. AFCI protection is more sophisticated than GFCI (which protects against shock) and detects arc hazards.

Pro Tip

AFCI breakers may nuisance-trip occasionally, which is normal. Frequent tripping suggests an underlying issue.

Example

A home inspection in New Jersey revealed bedroom circuits lacking AFCI protection, a code violation in all modern installations. Upgrading the electrical panel with AFCI breakers for bedroom circuits improved safety and code compliance.
